California Prison Riot
SACRAMENTO Two inmates at California State Prison, Sacramento, have been taken to an outside hospital following a fight at the prison in Folsom. Three inmates attacked a fourth inmate Monday morning with blades they had manufactured, according to a news release. When the three attackers ignored orders, correctional officers used one blast-dispersion grenade and fired one round from a Mini-14 rifle to stop the attack, officials said. Four inmates were injured, including one who was shot, according to Terry Thornton, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. The inmate who was shot and one who suffered stab wounds were taken by ambulance to an outside hospital. Both were reported in fair condition Monday afternoon. Thornton said two other inmates suffered minor injuries and were treated at the prison. No staff members were injured. Officers recovered three inmate-made weapons. The corrections department sent investigators to the prison. Officials said the team conducts criminal and administrative investigations into the use of deadly force. A deadly force review board also will conduct a full review. California State Prison, Sacramento, is a maximum-security prison that houses approximately 2,380 inmates and employs 1,700 people. The institution houses inmates serving long sentences and those labeled management problems at other institutions. It also houses inmates requiring specialized mental health treatment.
